H85.1112   History & Criticism   2 Credits
Instructor(s): Staff

This course provides an overview of the history and cultural importance of the rock musical on Broadway over the last four decades, beginning with the landmark 1968 production of Hair rock, to show how forms of pop music have come to dominate musical theater. We'll examine the history and impact of the rock musical by listening to original cast albums, watching videos of performances (and film versions) and reading critical commentary on rock musicals presented on and off Broadway (perhaps Rent and Movin' Out, depending on what class members may have seen). Seminar guests, including cast album producers and others, will join the class at sessions to be determined.
