Through reading, writing, and discussion, students investigate how soul music evolved. Students receive a strong foundational knowledge of black musical performance. We address the changing relationship of R & B music to race relations. Students learn what it means to “perform” soul music. We listen to, watch videos of, and discuss the musical contributions and performance crafts of the greatest and most renowned R & B performers since the inception of the form. Students also learn to produce critical writing on and progressive thinking about music.
