Designed for aspiring music executives, entrepreneurs and record producers, this course will address the ins and outs of A&R, the process of recruiting and developing musical talent. A&R executives function as the bridge between artists and record labels. This course will start with a historical look at A&R. We'll discuss musical scenes, famous A&R people, and how A&R people make up a vital part of the music industry. We will contrast the various styles of A&R and breakdown how different musical genres treat the position differently. We will also discuss the effects of new technology has on the position and have several guest speakers and a field trip. Through reading assignments, guest speaker presentations, in-class discussion and a series of individual and collaborative projects, students are expected by the end of the course to possess the fundamental skills and knowledge necessary to develop an artist for the contemporary marketplace.
