H85.1201 Required History & Criticism 4 Credits
Instructor(s): Jason King
This class investigates record producing as an art form. Record producers like Brian Eno, Glyn Johns, Quincy Jones, Tom Dowd, and Missy Elliott are as much creative artists as they are entrepreneurs. We look at different types of producers and production styles in rock, pop, hip-hop, and R & B. Some producers we may discuss include Phil Spector, George Martin, Brian Eno, Daniel Lanois, and the Bomb Squad. The goal of the class is for students to successfully analyze the quality of production in a given piece of popular music. The final project for the class involves a detailed case study of a record producer not yet studied in class.
