This course serves a triple function. First, it helps students think about the artist in popular music-what a musical artist is and can be, and how the artist interacts with fans. Second, it focuses briefly on crucial artists in popular music history, thus providing a rough overview of that history. Third, it introduces students to some excellent writing about popular music, and helps them figure out how to describe music in works themselves.
