H85.1229 Business 2 Credits
Instructor(s): Jim Anderson/Catherine Fitterman
This fall semester course will explore music and music business outside
the United States through classroom instruction, research projects,
interaction with guest speakers, and the potential to attend an
international music trade show. Throughout the semester students will
read and discuss current issues affecting the international music
industry, such as mobile technology, support for popular music and
artists, copyright, and in-depth analysis of the existing global music
marketplace and the potential for change and growth. A significant part
of the course involves a research project with an international music
company or country. The course is designed for a maximum enrollment of
24 juniors and seniors (12 from the Steinhardt Undergraduate Business
Program and 12 from the Clive Davis Department of Recorded Music). It
will be taught by Catherine Fitterman, Director of the Music Business
Program, and Jim Anderson, Chair of the Clive Davis Department of
Recorded Music. A maximum of 10 students will be selected from the fall
2006 “International Music Business Marketplace” class to enroll in the
companion zero-credit spring 2007 “lab” course, “Fieldwork in
International Music Business Studies.” The lab course consists entirely
of attending the six-day January 2008 MIDEM music industry trade show
and conference with Professors Fitterman and Anderson to present their
research papers.
