Biography

Ryan Paternite is an advanced doctoral candidate at New York University in Steinhardt School of Education’s program in Arts and Humanities Education. His major research interest is the application of “reader-response” to the teaching of directing, writing and production for television and film. As a free-lance director, his broadcast, cable, and corporate clients have included: ABN Amro, American Express, Black Entertainment Television, Fox, Shanachie Entertainment, Time Warner Cable, USA Network, and many others. Paternite’s projects are often related to music and education and incorporate his extensive musical training and conceptual approaches to composition and improvisation.
During twelve years in the music industry Paternite was the booking director for the Blue Note jazz clubs, Birdland jazz club, and a record producer signed to Koch Jazz. Paternite is also co-owner of Brooklyn’s premier rock venue, Southpaw. In addition to Tisch, he is currently an adjunct professor in Steinhardt’s department of Music and Performing Arts Professions and at Fairleigh Dickinson University in the department of Visual and Performing Arts. He lives in Maplewood, New Jersey with his wife and two daughters.
